"구치파치" takes the cover — and its artist vanished into the deep

Dear reader, This week the tank overflowed: 335 new fish from 22 artists splashed into our waters, and the community weighed in with 36 ratings. Riding the crest is "구치파치", a cover star whose creator swam off without signing in — the fish alone carries the glory, and carry it it does. Meanwhile "tina" tipped our scales at a mighty 1240 grams, proof that some fish are drawn to be legends.

구치파치

구치파치 · drawafish post

Just look at the sheer sass radiating from this bright green aquatic diva! With those heavy-lidded, mascara-swept anime eyes and fabulous plump lips, this fish brings a hilarious attitude we simply couldn't ignore. It’s the perfect blend of weird and wonderful for this week’s cover.

Most BeautifulStamp 1 of 5 · Nyx by Anonymous

"Nyx" arrived unsigned, like a note slipped under the door of the gallery — and yet it needed no introduction. There is a quiet elegance here that made this curator linger longer than she intended.

Most CreativeStamp 2 of 5 · 만달로어 by Anonymous

"만달로어" is exactly the kind of specimen I descend for: an idea nobody asked for, executed with total conviction. Whoever released it into our waters without signing in — the deep thanks you.

FunniestStamp 4 of 5 · 박사람 물고기 by Anonymous

"박사람 물고기" got a genuine laugh out of me — the name alone is a punchline that swims. To the anonymous artist behind it: we are laughing with your fish, and your fish is in on the joke.

MBARI Researchers Film Chance Encounter with a Rare Deep-Sea Bigfin Squid

During an expedition to study seamounts offshore of Central California, MBARI scientists and NOAA collaborators encountered the rarely seen deep-sea bigfin squid (Magnapinna sp.). It was only MBARI's second sighting of Magnapinna and the first confirmed live observation of the squid in the Northeastern Pacific Ocean.
